Consumption of fruits, vegetables and olive oil and the risk of coronary heart disease

Today, the most common cause of death is diseases associated with the circulatory system and heart. These diseases affect both women and men. Like other chronic diseases, cardiovascular disease can act preventively to change lifestyles and habits. First of all needs to change diet and physical activity. Coronary heart disease is the name for several heart diseases that occur due to blockage of the coronary arteries and reduced blood flow through them. Coronary heart disease is more common in men, but it is not an insignificant number of women who are affected by the disease.

It was conducted scientific research whose aim was to show the impact on the occurrence of coronary heart disease in women has a consumption of fruits, vegetables and olive oil. Already many scientific studies before these showed good effects of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to lower incidence of coronary disease, as well as in general on the prevention of chronic diseases. The study was conducted in Italy, in five centers. The study included 29,689 women between 1993. and 1998. From the observed women take the following data: education, marital status, whether smoke, alcohol consumption, height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, physical activity, whether they entered menopause, eating habits, consumption of fruits and vegetables and consumption of olive oil. During the research were recorded 144 events associated with coronary heart disease.

The results showed that increased consumption of leafy vegetables and olive oil in women of middle age reduces the incidence of coronary heart disease. Consumption of a diet rich in food of plant origin, and a small amount of animal fats also has a good preventive effect on the incidence of coronary heart disease. The positive effects also have the greater consumption of fruits. Consumption of of olive oil, which is widespread in Italy and in the Mediterranean, where is one of the main sources of fat in the diet also has beneficial effects on heart disease prevention, though not so many as consumption of leafy vegetables and fruits. The conclusion is that this research was conducted on a large number of women in Italy shows the benefits of consumption of fruits, vegetables and of olive oil on the occurrence of heart disease, and provides strong support for efforts to encourage greater consumption of healthy food and to change lifestyles relating to food that consume.
